Our Edinburgh project

Edinburgh · HOT TAR & CHIP
Edinburgh – 4,000 m² Country Estate Surface Dressing
UK Roadworks Group carried out 4,000 square metres of surface dressing on a country estate road in Edinburgh, Scotland. The existing route was constructed from road planings. We completed the general preparation and laid additional planings in low and sunken areas to regulate the road before surfacing. Our combi-unit tar and chip trucks then machine laid two layers of polymer-modified bitumen and aggregate. The completed stone finish follows the curved estate road through the woodland, creating a consistent gravel-effect approach while retaining the character of the country setting.
Preparation, materials and finish
- General road preparation. The existing road-planings route was prepared before the surface-dressing treatment.
- Regulating low and sunken areas. Additional road planings were laid in the low and sunken sections to bring the route to the prepared profile.
- Two-layer combi application. Combi-unit tar and chip trucks machine laid two layers using polymer-modified bitumen and aggregate across the 4,000 m² project.
Choosing a gravel-effect surface for your property
Hot tar and chip, also called surface dressing or bitumen-bonded aggregate, combines a bituminous binder with stone chippings. The aggregate colour gives the surface its appearance. We discuss the preferred finish alongside the existing base, levels, drainage and vehicles using your driveway or road.
Repairs, excavation, regulating or base reconstruction may be needed before the surface dressing itself. Tell us about soft areas, potholes, standing water and turning points. The work shown here is a project example; your quotation sets out the preparation and treatment agreed for your own site.
