Surface dressing for Ayrshire farm lanes
Long rural lanes need careful preparation where the surface is worn, broken or uneven. Send the approximate length and width, identify the current material and show any potholes, soft areas or standing water. We assess whether the road can accept dressing and what work is needed first.
Hot tar & chip is the familiar name for a bitumen-binder and stone-chipping finish. It is different from a layer of hot-mix asphalt, and it follows the prepared profile. It cannot correct an unstable base or deep rutting without the necessary preparatory work.
Private roads, estates and caravan parks
We welcome enquiries for estate roads, private access, rural driveways and suitable caravan or holiday park routes. Tell us about delivery vehicles, guest traffic, frequent turning and pedestrian use so the treatment can be assessed against the demands of the area.
A traditional stone finish and alternative aggregate colours can be discussed, subject to suitability and availability. Where heavy turning or loading calls for a different treatment, tarmac surfacing or local strengthening can be assessed as part of the overall project.
Preparation, patching and the finished surface
The agreed scope may include cleaning, vegetation removal, pothole repairs, grading, regulation and compaction. Sound existing asphalt or a suitably constructed base is assessed before the binder and chippings are applied. The quotation sets out the proposed system and preparation for the actual road.
After spraying and chip application, rolling seats the aggregate. We explain reopening, initial vehicle use, loose chippings and any sweeping arrangements. Aftercare is part of the handover, rather than a promise that a newly dressed road immediately behaves like mature asphalt.
Weather and planning the work
Surface dressing needs suitable weather and surface conditions. We can discuss a quotation and preparation now, but agree application dates around the required conditions and crew availability. A 24-hour enquiry line does not mean dressing can be applied in every season or in wet weather.
For a working farm or visitor site, tell us about deliveries, access requirements and periods when the lane is busiest. We agree practical arrangements for the treatment and initial use before booking the work.

Your questions
Are hot tar & chip and surface dressing the same service?
These are common names for the bitumen-and-stone treatment described here. Your quotation states the binder, aggregate, coats and preparation proposed for the site.
Can you surface dress a damaged farm lane?
We first assess the base and defects. Repairs, grading or strengthening may be required before dressing; it should not simply cover unresolved structural failure.
Can I arrange a quote outside the laying season?
Yes. We can discuss the site and preparation while scheduling application for suitable weather and surface conditions.
Do you cover caravan park roads?
Yes, where the route and traffic are suitable. We assess turning, loading, access and the underlying construction before confirming the recommended treatment.
