Scotland – Runway Planing & Hot Rolled Asphalt Repairs
Damaged sections of a Scottish runway were planed out to a depth of 80 mm before replacement surfacing. The repair specification included Colbond 50 bitumen-emulsion bond coat and machine-laid hot rolled asphalt. The photograph shows a strip of runway during the planing stage, with the milling machine and material collection ahead.

During the work
The work carried out
Plane the damaged runway sections
The damaged asphalt was removed to a depth of 80 mm within the agreed repair areas. Removing the failed material created space for the specified replacement construction.
Apply Colbond 50 bonding emulsion
Colbond 50 was used as the bitumen-emulsion bond coat between the prepared surface and replacement asphalt. Its role is to promote adhesion between the layers.
Machine-lay hot rolled asphalt
The prepared repair sections were resurfaced with machine-laid hot rolled asphalt. For a new runway enquiry, we review the operator’s specification, access window, work boundaries and handover requirements before agreeing a package.
