UK ROADWORKS GROUP
Glasgow Tarmac & Pothole Repairs – Distribution Centre Project
UK Roadworks Group carried out a major tarmac repair programme at a distribution centre in the Glasgow area, with repair sections covering up to around 1,800 m². Damaged asphalt was planed out, with saw-cutting and breakout used to define and remove failed sections. The planing depth was approximately 60 mm. A bitumen bonding tack coat was applied before laying heavy-duty hot SMA tarmac, and all repair joints were sealed with bitumen. These six photographs show the original potholes, preparation and completed resurfaced sections from the same job.

Before & after

Before the Glasgow-area distribution-centre repairs: potholes and broken asphalt within the marked parking area, with the repair sections identified on the surface.

Completed heavy-duty SMA tarmac repairs across parking bays. The Glasgow contract included approximately 60 mm planing, bitumen bonding tack coat and bitumen sealing to all repair joints.

Another completed section of the same distribution-centre project, with replacement asphalt beside the site building and within the parking layout.

A larger resurfaced section following removal of failed asphalt and laying of heavy-duty hot SMA. The surrounding retained surface remains visible.

Finished tarmac repairs across several parking bays at the Glasgow-area site. All six photographs form one distribution-centre repair case study.
The work carried out
Identify the failed tarmac and potholes
The original surface had potholes, cracking and deteriorated patches across parts of the parking area. The before photograph records these defects and the marked repair sections within the existing asphalt.
Plane, saw-cut and break out the damaged sections
The repair programme covered sections totalling up to around 1,800 m². We planed out damaged asphalt to approximately 60 mm, with saw-cutting and breakout used where required to remove failed sections and establish the repair boundaries. These dimensions describe this contract; another site may need a different repair depth.
Apply a bitumen bonding tack coat
A bitumen bonding tack coat was applied to the prepared areas before the replacement asphalt. The bonding layer formed part of the preparation between the retained construction and the new hot tarmac.
Lay heavy-duty hot SMA tarmac
The prepared sections were resurfaced with heavy-duty hot SMA, or stone mastic asphalt. The completed photographs show the replacement asphalt patches within the retained parking surface, including the larger repaired sections and smaller local areas.
Seal all repair joints with bitumen
All joints around the asphalt repairs were bitumen sealed as part of the work. The finished views show the repair interfaces and parking-bay lines across the resurfaced sections. They record different parts of one Glasgow distribution-centre project.
