Compact equipment for smaller asphalt repairs
Small patches, entrances and confined working areas may suit compact planing equipment. Our Ayrshire photograph shows a skid-steer sweeping attachment alongside a small planer during pothole-repair preparation. The size of the machine is selected around access, the extent of the damage and nearby features.
A lasting repair also depends on the condition beneath the visible pothole. We assess whether removal of the damaged surface is enough or whether weak material needs to be excavated. The quotation can include preparation, bonding, replacement hot tarmac, compaction and joint treatment according to the repair required. Enquiries are welcome from Ayr, Kilmarnock, Irvine, Troon and surrounding areas.
Ayrshire – Compact Planing & Pothole Repairs
A small pothole-repair job in Ayrshire used compact equipment for local asphalt removal and cleaning. The work involved a skid steer with planing and brush attachments, suited to the scale of the repair area. The photograph shows a compact loader with a sweeping attachment working beside a small planer.

The work carried out
- Plane the local repair areas. Compact planing equipment was used for the small pothole-repair job. Local removal allows the failed sections to be prepared without automatically milling the whole adjoining surface.
- Brush and clean the working area. A skid-steer brush was used as part of the preparation. Clearing loose material is a separate step before the agreed repair and replacement surfacing.
From asphalt removal to the replacement surface
Road planing, also called asphalt milling, removes an agreed depth of existing surfacing. Sweeping and cleaning follow the removal. Where resurfacing is included, the specified tack or bond coat, asphalt layers, laying method and compaction are agreed for the intended use. Any weak foundation or drainage issue needs its own assessment.
Our family-run business can quote for the full preparation and surfacing package. We have our own equipment and insulated trucks for our materials. Tell us if the work needs to fit around opening hours or a night shift so we can discuss access, materials and the available working window.

- Number of potholes and approximate length and width of each

Your written quotation sets out the agreed work area, preparation, materials, handling of removed asphalt, price and programme. Depths and material grades shown in a case study are specific to that project.
Road-planing questions
Do small potholes always need a large road planer?
No. Compact equipment or other local removal methods may suit a small repair. We choose the approach after assessing the area, access, depth of damage and surrounding surface.
Is road planing the same as laying recycled road planings?
Road planing removes existing asphalt. Road planings are the reclaimed material, which can be supplied and compacted for a separately specified road, track or yard. Tell us whether you need asphalt removed, recycled material installed, or preparation followed by new hot asphalt.
