Repairing worn junctions and turning areas
A junction repair must fit the adjoining road surfaces and the way vehicles turn through the area. We assess worn patches, damaged edges and levels around drainage before defining the repair boundaries. Where the underlying construction has failed, the scope may need excavation or base repairs in addition to planing.
The photograph below records the original worn and patched approach, rather than a finished repair. For your Dunfermline project, send views from each approach and identify the traffic using it. This helps us discuss the work area, material specification and access arrangements before a written quotation.
Dunfermline – Road Junction Planing & Hot Tarmac Repairs
A roadway junction in Dunfermline was repaired by planing out approximately 60 mm of existing surfacing and replacing it with hot tarmac. Colbond 50 bonding emulsion was included in the preparation between the existing surface and new asphalt. The photograph records the worn and previously patched junction approach before the resurfacing work.

The work carried out
- Remove approximately 60 mm of surfacing. The junction repair involved planing out approximately 60 mm of the existing asphalt. The removal depth was part of this project’s repair specification.
- Prepare with Colbond 50. Colbond 50 bitumen-emulsion bond coat was applied as part of the preparation, helping the replacement asphalt bond to the prepared surface.
- Lay the replacement hot tarmac. Hot tarmac replaced the removed surface. At a junction, a new enquiry should identify the turning movements, adjoining levels, drainage and any access that needs to remain available.
From asphalt removal to the replacement surface
Road planing, also called asphalt milling, removes an agreed depth of existing surfacing. Sweeping and cleaning follow the removal. Where resurfacing is included, the specified tack or bond coat, asphalt layers, laying method and compaction are agreed for the intended use. Any weak foundation or drainage issue needs its own assessment.
Our family-run business can quote for the full preparation and surfacing package. We have our own equipment and insulated trucks for our materials. Tell us if the work needs to fit around opening hours or a night shift so we can discuss access, materials and the available working window.

Send the site postcode and the following details so we can assess the work and arrange the next step:
- Photos of the junction from each approach
- Approximate dimensions and existing covers or drainage
- Vehicle types and the access that must remain available
Your written quotation sets out the agreed work area, preparation, materials, handling of removed asphalt, price and programme. Depths and material grades shown in a case study are specific to that project.
Road-planing questions
Can you repair the junction without resurfacing the whole road?
A defined local repair may be suitable if the adjoining surface and supporting construction are sound. We inspect the damage and tie-in levels before confirming whether a local planed repair or more extensive work is appropriate.
Is road planing the same as laying recycled road planings?
Road planing removes existing asphalt. Road planings are the reclaimed material, which can be supplied and compacted for a separately specified road, track or yard. Tell us whether you need asphalt removed, recycled material installed, or preparation followed by new hot asphalt.
