Surface dressing contractors for lanes and access roads
Hot tar and chip is the familiar name for a surface dressing using a bituminous binder and stone chippings. It creates a textured wearing surface and has a different appearance from dense asphalt. The binder, aggregate, number of applications and preparation are selected for the job. Send photographs and measurements so we can discuss whether this approach is appropriate for your road.
Patching and preparation before dressing
Surface dressing is not a substitute for a sound road foundation. Potholes, movement, soft edges and water problems need assessment before the new wearing surface is applied. Existing asphalt may need cleaning and local repairs; an unbound or heavily damaged road can need more substantial preparation. The written quotation identifies the agreed preparation rather than assuming the same treatment suits every surface.
Farm lanes, estates and caravan parks
Long access routes can be assessed for tar-and-chip treatment alongside local road repairs. Tell us about agricultural traffic, gradients, turning areas, nearby buildings and vehicle access during the work. For a caravan park or leisure site, include guest movements and pedestrian routes. Areas exposed to frequent tight turning, specialist loads or contamination may need a different surfacing specification.
Bitumen spraying, stone application and rolling
Our portfolio shows binder application, stone spreading and rolling, including work using a specialist combi unit. The site programme depends on preparation, access and suitable weather. Traffic control during the work and the management of initial loose chippings form part of the job planning. Aftercare and any required sweeping are agreed for the specification and site.
Choosing between tar and chip and tarmac
Compare the existing construction, intended traffic, desired appearance and maintenance requirements. Surface dressing offers a stone-chip finish on a suitable prepared surface; hot asphalt provides a different construction and finish. We can discuss both options, but an informed recommendation needs the actual site conditions rather than a decision based only on price per square metre.

Your hot tar & chip questions
Is hot tar and chip the same as tarmac?
No. Surface dressing uses a binder and stone chippings to create a textured wearing surface. Tarmac or asphalt is laid as a mixed material. The two methods have different preparation and suitability requirements.
Can you surface dress a damaged farm lane?
Possibly, after its condition and necessary repairs have been assessed. Deep failures, drainage issues and weak sections must be addressed; surface dressing alone does not rebuild a failing foundation.
Will there be loose stones at first?
Some initial loose chippings can occur with surface dressing. We discuss controlled use, aftercare and sweeping arrangements for the agreed specification.
