Carriageway preparation and connections to retained asphalt
Planing creates space for the replacement surface and establishes the repair boundaries. The depth is agreed around the existing construction, damage and required finished levels. At the edges of a work area, we consider how the new asphalt will meet the retained carriageway and nearby drainage features.
For St Fillans road or access enquiries, provide the work limits, available width and any restrictions on vehicle access. Public-highway enquiries should include the client specification and arrangements for traffic management and permissions. Private-road projects need clear access arrangements for the people using the route.
St Fillans – Highway Planing & Hot Tarmacadam Resurfacing
Public highway work in St Fillans combined removal of the existing asphalt with sweeping, bonding tack coat and replacement hot tarmacadam. The photograph shows planing in progress along the carriageway, with the removed strip clearly visible beside the retained surface. The work followed the sequence of removal, preparation, bonding and resurfacing.

The work carried out
- Plane out the agreed carriageway area. The existing highway surface was planed out to prepare the agreed section for resurfacing. The photograph captures the removal stage along the roadside wall.
- Sweep and apply a bonding tack coat. The planed area was swept and a bonding tack coat applied before the new asphalt. Cleaning and bonding form separate parts of the preparation.
- Resurface with hot tarmacadam. Hot tarmacadam was laid over the prepared area. For a similar highway scheme, the client specification, work boundaries, access and traffic-management arrangements are agreed before mobilisation.
From asphalt removal to the replacement surface
Road planing, also called asphalt milling, removes an agreed depth of existing surfacing. Sweeping and cleaning follow the removal. Where resurfacing is included, the specified tack or bond coat, asphalt layers, laying method and compaction are agreed for the intended use. Any weak foundation or drainage issue needs its own assessment.
Our family-run business can quote for the full preparation and surfacing package. We have our own equipment and insulated trucks for our materials. Tell us if the work needs to fit around opening hours or a night shift so we can discuss access, materials and the available working window.

Road-planing questions
Is the planing depth the same for every road?
No. The removal depth depends on the existing construction, extent of damage and replacement layers. A quoted depth on a previous job is an example, not a standard depth for every road in St Fillans.
Is road planing the same as laying recycled road planings?
Road planing removes existing asphalt. Road planings are the reclaimed material, which can be supplied and compacted for a separately specified road, track or yard. Tell us whether you need asphalt removed, recycled material installed, or preparation followed by new hot asphalt.
