Planing and resurfacing for larger paved areas
We welcome Glasgow enquiries for commercial access roads, car parks, private roads and larger asphalt repair areas. The first decision is whether the existing surface can be retained below a replacement layer or whether damaged sections need deeper excavation. We assess the work area, surface levels and machinery access before agreeing the scope.
For airfield and gliding-club work, provide the operator’s requirements and permitted working window. The project shown below is near Glasgow; the removal depth and SMA material were selected for that contract. Your own quotation will identify the preparation, surfacing specification and responsibilities for access and handover.
Near Glasgow – Gliding Club Planing & SMA Resurfacing
At a former airbase now used as a gliding club near Glasgow, UK Roadworks Group removed 40 mm of damaged existing surfacing. The area was swept clean, a bitumen bonding tack coat was power sprayed, and 10 mm SMA was machine laid and rolled. Our contract included the supply, laying and compaction of the replacement material.

The work carried out
- Remove 40 mm of damaged surfacing. The existing surface was planed to a depth of 40 mm, removing the damaged layer and preparing the area for replacement asphalt. The photograph records the milled surface beside retained asphalt.
- Sweep and power-spray the tack coat. After planing, the area was swept clean. Our power sprayers applied a bitumen bonding tack coat to help the replacement asphalt adhere to the prepared surface.
- Supply, machine-lay and roll SMA. We supplied and machine laid 10 mm stone mastic asphalt, then rolled the new material. The 10 mm designation describes the nominal aggregate size of the SMA mix; the removal depth on this contract was 40 mm.

Road planing, also called asphalt milling, removes an agreed depth of existing surfacing. Sweeping and cleaning follow the removal. Where resurfacing is included, the specified tack or bond coat, asphalt layers, laying method and compaction are agreed for the intended use. Any weak foundation or drainage issue needs its own assessment.
Our family-run business can quote for the full preparation and surfacing package. We have our own equipment and insulated trucks for our materials. Tell us if the work needs to fit around opening hours or a night shift so we can discuss access, materials and the available working window.

Road-planing questions
Does 10 mm SMA mean the new asphalt is only 10 mm thick?
No. The 10 mm designation is the nominal aggregate size of the stone mastic asphalt mix. It is separate from the laying thickness. On the gliding-club project, the reported planing depth was 40 mm; the asphalt construction for a new job is specified separately.
Is road planing the same as laying recycled road planings?
Road planing removes existing asphalt. Road planings are the reclaimed material, which can be supplied and compacted for a separately specified road, track or yard. Tell us whether you need asphalt removed, recycled material installed, or preparation followed by new hot asphalt.
